It was the summer of 1994. That was the first summer of Beth and my marriage. I was working nights in a school supply warehouse. She was doing food service at a nursing home and taking summer classes. It was a hot summer day, and we decided to go to a matinee. We chose Speed.

I still vividly remember walking out of the movie that day, blinking in the bright sunlight, and thinking: “That was the most exciting movie I’ve ever seen!”

This is a story I’ve told before, so it might sound familiar to some of you, but I feel it introduces our topic for today pretty well, so I’m using it again:

When I turned 16, I thought it was pretty cool. I had my license. I had the ability to drive. I was somebody.

This may surprise you, but prior to turning 16 I wasn’t exactly successful in the department of impressing girls. But I figured with the ability to drive, all that would change.
