God Bless America?
When I was in seminary, I had the opportunity to attend our denomination’s annual meeting as a student. We call it General Synod, and on this particular occasion it was being held in Milwaukee. On the Sunday we were there, we were given the option of worshipping at any number of denominational churches in or near Milwaukee. I don’t remember which church I ended up at, but it was in one of the smaller towns in the area.

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

I was reading this week that before the creation of the Christian church, burial after death was reserved for the rich. In most every culture, it was only the wealthy who had funerals and specially set apart final resting places—think the pyramids in Egypt. Pretty much everyone else was thrown out with the trash.

The Company You Keep
It is said that you can tell a lot about a man by the people he associates with. If that’s true, then what are we supposed to make of Jesus?

No Fun Without Thinking it is Sin
In the book The Jesus I Never Knew Philip Yancey shares portions of an article written by a friend of his, the writer Virginia Stem Owens. While teaching a composition class at Texas A&M in the ‘90s, she decided to have her class read “The Sermon on the Mount” and write a short essay in response to it.

How Does a Man’s Name Become a Swear Word?
About a dozen years ago or so, a friend shared his season tickets to a sporting event with me. I’ve been to a few sporting events. Several major league baseball games, some NCAA tournament games, a lot of UNI stuff. But this was the first time I ever went to an Iowa Hawkeye Football game at Kinnick Stadium.

It was one of the worst experiences I ever had as a spectator.
