Hebrews 12:1-3 Hall of Faith: Jesus: Run the Race

One Man Left Behind
I have run a marathon.

Now, I realize several people here have run marathons. Many of you have run more than one. And many of you have run yours much faster than I ran mine. So I’m not bragging or anything. I just want to try to give those of you who haven’t run one some sense of what it is like.

Hebrews 11:32-38 The Martyrs: The World Was Not Worthy of Them

But If Not…
June, 1940. Hitler’s armies were running roughshod through Europe. Already they had Blitzkrieged through the low countries of Holland and Belgium and much of France. They had the allies on the run, and they had bottled up the British Expeditionary Force, nearly 400,000 men, on the beaches of Dunkirk.

It was a military disaster. With the German airplanes strafing their positions and the German tank divisions poised to pounce, it looked like WWII was nearly over.

Lost Girl
Kelly grew up on the proverbial wrong side of the tracks.

Her Dad walked out when she was 4. After that, it was just her and her mom in a series of apartments, rental houses, and trailer parks. Kelly managed to make it to school most days, but her presence was about all she brought to the academic experience. She was an indifferent student, and the older she got the deeper her indifference grew.

Sure of What We Hope For
Today we are continuing our series from Hebrews 11. Hebrews 11, you will recall, is the Bible’s great faith chapter. It gives us example after example of people from the Old Testament who changed the world by putting their faith in God.

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith like this:

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Luck vs. Providence
When I was a teenager our high school Sunday school class was held in the living room of the parsonage. There would usually be about4 or 5 of us, right after church, recapping what we had watched on Saturday Night Live before Pastor Mike would come and teach us about the Heidelberg Catechism.

To Get in, You have to be Great
The Hall of Fame. It’s a sporting tradition. Athletes play their whole careers with the hope that once their playing days are over they will be honored for their accomplishments in the sport they love. Usually elected by a committee of their peers, induction into the Hall of Fame is an accomplishment no one can take away.
