1 Peter 3:13-16 Beyond Sunday Morning…: Spiritual Conversations

Can I Tell You about Jesus?
When I was in seminary I took a class called “Personal Evangelism.” It was a core course for the program I was in and it was somewhat legendary on campus. The professor was Dr. John Nyquist and it was well known that a requirement of the class was for students to engage in and document 10 different encounters where we shared the good news of Jesus with people.

Psalm 63 Beyond Sunday Morning: Hungry

Duty or Delight?
Imagine , if you will, that I brought home a dozen roses for Beth. Now, some people, like Beth herself, might have to use a little more imagination here. I don’t bring home roses as often as she deserves. But let’s imagine that I do.

And let’s say that she gets the roses and is very moved by them. Let’s say she gets a big smile on her face and gives me a hug and says “Thank you, they are very beautiful.”

20 years ago back in 1993, Bob Cleveringa asked me this question:
If you could snap your fingers and know that you could not fail what would you do?
I was a hog farmer at the time and helping with the Sr. High Youth Ministry at First Ref. Church in Orange City as a sponsor. And Bob was taking all the sponsors through this class on Discovering your spiritual gifts, Understanding God’s Design for your Life.
And the question he asked us was:
If I could snap my fingers and know that I could not fail what would I do?

Ephesians 1:15-23 Beyond Sunday Morning: The Eyes of Your Heart

Chariots of Fire
One of my favorite Bible stories is tucked away in 2 Kings chapter 6. It’s a story about a man named Elisha.

Elisha was a prophet. That means, God told him things that He didn’t tell other people. As a prophet, Elisha often spoke to people on God’s behalf.

Luke 14:25-33 Beyond Sunday Morning…

A Free Meal
This is the time for going back to school. Last weekend was the time for college students to get into their dorms, for college freshmen it was time to get out on their own for the very first time.

I still remember my first couple of weeks as a college freshman. It was all pretty overwhelming. Trying to get along with roommates I had only just met. Trying to find all my classes and get to them on time. Trying to figure out which groups I was going to belong to.
